I have been learning, struggling, evaluating and experiencing design all my life.
Truly.
I am not someone who went to school to become a designer. I went to art school to learn how to become a better artist. To live with myself and the creative that matures with me on a daily basis. I wanted to learn the history and principles of art and study the artists and designers who made the choice to live by their work.
I am inspired Mark Rothko, Andrew Wyeth and Mike and Doug Starn.
BLACKSTRAP
Mountain Lifestyle Gear
BLACKSTRAP is an OG outdoor company started in Bend Oregon in 2008. They have been working and supporting outdoor culture and events ever since. In short, I was asked to help build a unique color system that would help amplify the brands original start in Bend.
I wanted BLACKSTRAP to be able to own the colors, be able to talk to them in their brand. I started looking at the wildlife. The bark, the water, the flowers and leaves. I was imagining an entire new color system based on the indigenous plants, trees, lakes, and streams that were native to Bend.
Partnering with BLACKSTRAP was a huge deep dive collaborative experience with the marketing and design teams.
An indigenous inspired color system was not only something they could own and speak to, but something that pointed to their original heritage from where the company started.
After the color system was designed, we were so inspired that we took a look at building some graphics that brought more visual attention, and could be more unique to the brand. New graphic design that would stand out and show off our new color system.
This was one of my favorite projects because of how closely we worked with one another. These were deep ideas, huge conversations and design experiments.
There is a huge value here, being able to authentically celebrate the natural colors and heritage that centers around the original development of BLACKSTRAP as an outdoor company in Bend Oregon.
