I have been learning, struggling, evaluating and experiencing design all my life.
Truly.
I am not someone who went to school to become a designer. I went to art school to learn how to become a better artist. To live with myself and the creative that matures with me on a daily basis. I wanted to learn the history and principles of art and study the artists and designers who made the choice to live by their work.
I am inspired Mark Rothko, Andrew Wyeth and Mike and Doug Starn.
Gozney Pizza Oven
Below are some concept sketches for a social concept for the Gozney pizza oven. I have been making pizzas for about 17 years. Making pizza is an art and zen to me. Everything is from scratch. There is no rush just aesthetic enjoyment in the visual of pulling one out of the oven.
There is a lot of passion here. So with this design approach, I took the same path, real materials and hands on. I had been talking to Chatham [ marketing director ] about the oven and how we could potentially change the way people were looking at the product on social media because everybody is so used to scrolling by with no attention as most media has no art direction and looks the same.
I wanted to create something that caused pause, had a lot more design depth, and created appreciation, not only for making the pizza but the oven behind it.
To get people to stop and take notice, I hand built the base layer with papers and a little grit to give a “touched” background. The approaches also offered a unique graphic approach to showcase the product. Here are a few of the work ups on the concept.
